The Power of Forgiveness

'I cancelled all that debt of yours when you appealed to me. Were you not bound then, to have pity on your fellow servant, just as I had pity on you?' #Matthew18: 21-35

Today's Gospel reminds us of God's universal law; 'the measure of what we give, is the measure of what we receive' This is true also for forgiveness; the degree to which we forgive ourselves and others, is the degree to which we will be forgiven. But what is it that we forgive? In the Lord's prayer we ask 'forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us'. Our trespasses are those things which build walls between ourselves and the love of God. Our trespasses are thoughts, habits, behaviours which are destructive, which cause disconnection and distance from our true divine selves. When we hold forgiveness back from ourselves and others, we create a rotting dam of resentment, anger pride and self-pity. The Lord wants His spiritual power of Love and Healing to flow freely in us and through us, which is why He calls us to live everyday anew; to let go of the past so that we can truly live in the present.

Today. let us reflect on those people or circumstances in our lives where were are withholding love and building a wall of resistance. Let us ask the Lord for surrender and the grace to bring love into the situation that we may be released from the bonds that keep us less than children of God. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amend.
